Concrete in a Creek-Side Village

Cambridge straddles the line between Dane and Jefferson counties, and Koshkonong Creek runs right through the center of the village on its way south to Lake Koshkonong. Of the 1,638 people counted in 2020, 1,539 lived in the Dane County portion and 99 in Jefferson County. Whichever side you are on, if you are looking for concrete contractors in Cambridge, the creek, the age of the village and the hard winters all shape what a good job looks like.

Platted in 1847, rebuilt by 1910

Farmer Joseph Keyes filed plans for the settlement with the Dane County Register of Deeds on October 15, 1847, and the first structure in the area was a dam on Koshkonong Creek. A fire in 1890 destroyed most businesses and parts of Main Street, and the town was rebuilt by 1910. Many properties near the center of the village are old, and their walks, steps and garage slabs have usually been replaced in pieces over the years. When we replace one piece, we match its finish and joint spacing to the sections that are staying, so the property still looks like one place.

Working near the creek

Lots on the low ground along Koshkonong Creek tend to have wetter soil than lots on higher ground. That affects every slab:

  • Base: we dig out soft soil and put down a thicker layer of compacted gravel
  • Grade: we set a firm slope away from the house and toward a safe place for water to go
  • Timing: we avoid pouring on saturated ground after a thaw or a heavy rain
  • Protection: a sealer slows down water and salt soaking into the surface

If a lot is close to the water, some work may also fall under shoreland or floodplain rules. We check before we design.

Pottery, trails and visitors

In the 1980s and 1990s, Cambridge was called the salt glaze pottery capital of the world, and more recently the village has drawn mountain bikers from southeastern Wisconsin. CamRock County Park offers hiking, cross-country ski trails and a 16-mile mountain bike track. Lake Ripley, near the village, has long been a destination for Chicago travelers. For homeowners, that means front walks and steps that see visitors, patios for entertaining, and storage slabs for bikes, kayaks and gear.

Built to last through winter

Cambridge sits at about 850 feet, and its winters bring the same freeze-thaw damage seen across southern Wisconsin. Every exterior pour we do here uses air-entrained concrete, placed on a compacted base, sloped to drain, jointed at the right spacing and properly cured. We recommend sealing driveways and walks, and using sand instead of rock salt on new concrete during its first winter.

Cambridge Questions

Do you work on the Jefferson County side of Cambridge?

Yes. We work throughout the village, in both the Dane County and Jefferson County portions.

My lot is near Koshkonong Creek. Will a patio hold up?

Yes, if it is built for wet ground. A thicker compacted base, a firm slope away from the house and a sealer go a long way. We also check whether floodplain or shoreland rules apply.

Can you match new steps to an older house?

We size the steps and landing to suit the house and match finish and edge detail so the new work fits in.

How long does a patio replacement take in Cambridge?

Most residential patios take a day or two to remove and prepare, a day to pour and finish, and about a week before normal furniture and foot traffic. Weather and access can change that, and we give you a schedule with your estimate.
